May 25, 2015 Boy Scouts/Cub Scouts Flag Retirement Ceremony

When American flags get worn or damaged, there are several ceremonies utilized to honorably retire these flags. One of these ceremonies, shown below, was performed by Boy Scout Troop 11 and Cub Scout Pack 11 on Memorial Day. Post 48 Chesnee is honored to have this ceremony performed on our property.

The flag is moved into position for its retirement


This involves cutting each stripe from the flag one at a time
L to R Cubmaster Michael Wiggins, Jaylen Glenn,

Post member Dave Jacobi (USMC) deposits the
first stripe in the burn barrel


Post member Jack Wiggins (USN) deposits the
second stripe in the barrel


Post member Jack Smith (USA) deposits the
third stripe in the barrel


Cub Scout Daniel Griffin deposited a stripe in the barrel
This continued for all 13 stripes. The stripes represented each of the thirteen colonies
and they were announced in the order they ratified the Constitution.


This continued until only the canton was left
Boy Scouts Guy Henry Atchley & Anthony Wiggins are holding the canton


The canton was folded into an appropriate size to fit into the barrel


And it was deposited into the barrel
